Q. 3.
Further query on the answer given on the question based on friction.

In the following question :

While walking on ice, one should take small steps to avoid slipping. This is because smaller steps ensure

a.)      larger friction

b.)     smaller friction

c.)      larger normal force

d.)     smaller normal force

You said option (d) is correct. But smaller normal force implies that friction is also smaller since friction is directly proportional to normal force. But smaller friction means that person will slip on the ice which is not what we want that is avoiding friction.

Aadi3000, I did not notice that the option were " smaller and larger normal force". I missed the word normal.

See if you are standing straight the normal force is maximum and the person will not slip. When the foot is at an angle, the force can be resolved into two components, one horizontal and the other verical.

If the horizontal component of force increases the chances of slipping will increase. So in taking small steps the normal component of force remains large and horizontal component is kept minimum.

So the correct option will be (c).

If there is any discrepancy we can discuss.

Now sir as you say larger normal force is the answer so cannt we say that option a.) i.e. larger friction can also be the answer since normal force is directly proportional to the force of friction. Hnece larger normal force implies larger friction.
